China is fuming over the Biden administration’s move to steer investment in artificial intelligence away from China and towards other countries. China has accused the US of economic coercion and sci-tech bullying, using the excuse of national security to oppress other countries.
The administration is developing an executive order aimed at keeping AI and other technology-related investments, such as semiconductors and quantum computing, out of China in order to help the US maintain its competitive edge.
However, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned that China may take steps to counteract what it calls US bullying in the tech sector.
The US may launch the initiative at a mid-May meeting of the Group of Seven nations in Japan, which China is firmly opposed to, claiming that the US’s true intention is to take away the right to development from China and maintain US supremacy for its selfish interests.
This act of economic coercion and sci-tech bullying is against the principles of market economy and fair competition, undermining the international economic and trading order, disrupting and destabilizing global industrial and supply chains, and hurting the interests of the whole world.
This situation would raise tensions even further between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, leading to a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
The US military must keep pace with China’s military and be in a position to assist in the defense of Taiwan.
On the issue of AI, many experts are increasingly worried that China may advance an AI system that exhibits core values of the Communist Chinese Party – for example, an AI chat program that avoids spitting out answers that criticize the party. The preferred outcome is a democratic AI standard.
