In an unprecedented show of unity, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and President Joe Biden have come together to denounce Uganda’s recently enacted law that imposes the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.” This controversial legislation has triggered international outrage, and both Cruz and Biden are making their voices heard on the matter.
Senator Cruz took to social media, expressing his strong opposition and labeling the law as “horrific and completely wrong.” He emphasized that any law criminalizing homosexuality or imposing the death penalty for such acts is grotesque and goes against the core values of civilized nations.
Cruz called for global condemnation of this blatant human rights abuse, urging all nations to stand together in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
President Biden also released a statement, calling for the immediate repeal of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act. He labeled it a tragic violation of universal human rights, unworthy of the Ugandan people and detrimental to the country’s economic growth. Biden acknowledged the widespread support for repeal, both within Uganda and across the globe, emphasizing that no individual should live in fear or be subjected to violence and discrimination based on their sexual orientation.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, President Biden has directed the National Security Council to thoroughly evaluate the implications of Uganda’s law on all aspects of U.S. engagement with the country. This assessment includes aid programs, investments, and eligibility for trade benefits. The administration is also considering additional measures, such as sanctions and travel restrictions, targeting individuals involved in severe human rights abuses or corruption.
The White House emphasized the substantial financial support the United States provides to Uganda, amounting to nearly $1 billion annually. President Biden’s statement underscored that this reprehensible act is part of a broader trend of human rights violations and corruption in Uganda. He highlighted the risks faced by U.S. government personnel, implementing partners, tourists, and members of the business community residing in Uganda.
Since the introduction of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, reports of violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals have surged. Innocent Ugandans now live in constant fear, hesitating to seek vital medical care or facing eviction and job termination due to hateful reprisals.
The law not only perpetuates discrimination but also endangers the safety and freedom of countless individuals who simply wish to live their lives without fear.
While the current version of the law does not criminalize LGBTQ+ identity, it maintains the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.” This includes cases involving individuals with HIV, minors, and other vulnerable groups. The severity of punishment is alarming, with suspects convicted of attempted aggravated homosexuality facing lengthy prison sentences.
The international community has joined the United States in unequivocally condemning Uganda’s new law. Senator Cruz and President Biden’s unified stance demonstrates that the protection of human rights transcends political divisions.
The United States will continue to evaluate its engagement with Uganda and take appropriate action to address this gross violation of human rights.
