In a shocking revelation, America First Legal has exposed the Biden administration’s direct involvement in the raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
The evidence contradicts the administration’s previous claims that they were “stunned” to learn about the raid on social media. According to Reed D. Rubinstein, America First Legal senior counselor and director of oversight and investigations, internal government documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request suggest that the Biden administration unlawfully abused its power to silence its political opponents.
The newly uncovered information confirms previous Fox News reports that the FBI gained access to Trump’s records through a “special access request” from the Biden White House. Furthermore, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) had previously claimed it had not been involved in the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation.
However, John Laster, the Archives official responsible for administering all access requests for Presidential records, was involved in the request.
America First Legal’s findings detail the involvement of the NARA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) in referring the matter to the DOJ. The organization also points out that the special access statute authorizes such requests to an incumbent president only when the records in question are needed for “the conduct of current business” of the White House.
America First Legal argues that providing documents to the DOJ for purposes of a criminal investigation is not the “current business” of the White House.
The August letter from NARA acting head Debra Wall to Trump’s attorney Evan Corcoran seemingly hinted at President Biden’s involvement in the scandal.
In the letter, Wall wrote that President Biden deferred to her determination, in consultation with the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel, on whether to uphold the former President’s “protective assertion of executive privilege.”
