As Democrats continue to push their radical agenda, they have found yet another way to waste taxpayer dollars. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, has proposed a plan to send illegal migrants to college for free, with taxpayers footing the bill that could cost around $1.2 million in the first year alone.
According to a report from the New York Post, Adams’ plan would provide an estimated 100 migrants with 12 months of classes, room and board in upstate Sullivan County.
The pilot program will be overseen by Adams’ newly created Office of Asylum Seeker Operations, which works on the coordination of the city’s continued response to a large influx of migrants with a focus on resettlement and legal services, as well as a new 24/7 arrival center for asylum seekers.
While the total cost of the plan has not been disclosed, it is likely to cost taxpayers $1.2 million in the first year, based on the price of two semesters at SUNY Sullivan. This is yet another example of Democrats wasting taxpayer dollars on a misguided attempt to reward illegal immigration.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who serves as chair of the House Republican Conference, blasted the plan, accusing Adams of “making a permanent welfare system for illegal immigrants in New York State.”
She also pointed out that “by spending New Yorkers’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars on college classes for migrants, he is incentivizing and rewarding illegal immigration simply to export the crisis of Democrats’ own making out of New York City.”
The migrant crisis in New York City has already cost taxpayers around $4.6 million a day, with an estimated 50,000 migrants processed by the city since the spring and more than 31,000 living at city-wide emergency shelters.
An internal memo from the New York City Office of Management and Budget states that the city will spend an estimated $4.2 billion on costs related to migrants and asylum seekers that would be spent through June 30, 2023, and the end of fiscal year 2024.
Adams’ plan is just the latest example of Democrats wasting taxpayer dollars to support illegal immigration. While Republicans are working to secure our borders and enforce our laws, Democrats are more concerned with rewarding those who break them.
It’s time for Democrats to stop wasting taxpayer dollars on misguided policies and start working to keep our country safe and prosperous.
