During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Real Time host Bill Maher expressed concerns about the Democrats’ chances of winning the White House in 2024 if President Biden isn’t their nominee.
While Maher believes Biden would win against former President Trump in a potential rematch, he stated that a crowded GOP field could potentially split the anti-Trump vote, resulting in Trump getting the nomination. Maher suggested that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis may be the only challenger who can defeat Trump in a one-on-one matchup.
Maher also defended Biden’s record as president, stating that he “restored normality” and got various bills passed in Congress. He dismissed the issue over Biden’s age as a “red herring,” insisting that being young or spry isn’t necessary to be president.
When asked if DeSantis is an “old school” Republican or a “Trumper 2.0,” Maher called it “the great question.” He noted that DeSantis can be a real old school Republican who takes care of business, but also throws red meat to the base and does outrageous stuff.
Maher said that to have a future in the Republican party, especially if one wants to take on Trump, they need to ride both horses at once. Maher also mentioned that people in Florida like DeSantis, and that he did a good job handling COVID-19 in the state.
